Canyon Coal and Kangra no longer Bettercoal Suppliers

Since 1 April 2021, South African coal producers Canyon Coal and Kangra are no longer Bettercoal Suppliers.

As established in our Assurance system, Bettercoal producers must be re-assessed within five years of their first assessment to remain a Bettercoal producer. Canyon Coal, owner of Kangra, decided not to proceed with re-assessment and therefore cannot remain in our producer network. Both companies have now been officially disengaged from Bettercoal.

Bettercoal is committed to promoting continuous improvement across environmental, social and governance (ESG) issues in the mining and sourcing of coal. This is particularly important in key coal producing countries, such as South Africa, where the Bettercoal Standard can play an important role in supporting improvements across ESG issues. The Bettercoal Code 2.0 is an internationally recognised Standard for assessing, assuring and sustaining stringent ethical, environmental and social performance in the coal mining supply chain. Being a Bettercoal producer is an important way in which coal companies can demonstrate their commitment to these issues to key stakeholders.
