Bettercoal responds to Vattenfall's Human Rights Risk Assessment

Published on November 7, 2017

Following the publication of Vattenfall’s report A Human Rights Risk Assessment in Colombiawhich looks into the impact of coal mining on Human Rights in Colombia, Bettercoal would like to issus the following statement:

One of the core value propositions of Bettercoal is that it allows coal producers to deal with one entity as opposed to having to undergo multiple assessments by individual companies.

Whilst Bettercoal fully recognises its Members’ individual responsibilities to the sustainability of their own value chains, as well as individual commitments made to the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rightsand other initiatives that strive to ensure Human Rights are enshrined across operations, Bettercoal will work in close collaboration with its Members, as we believe that individual initiatives will carry less influence than multi-stakeholder ones.

Human Rights are fully enshrined in the Bettercoal Code and through the Continuous Improvement Plans developed with coal producers, Bettercoal can ensure that its recommendations are taken on board and can have real impact on the ground and country wide.

Bettercoal will continue working in close partnership with coal producers in Colombia who have committed to the Bettercoal Code, namely Cerrejon, Drummond and Prodeco, and we look forward to continuing our engagement with all stakeholders.
