Bettercoal position statement on the recent events in Colombia

Published on December 7, 2017

Due to the continuous reported threats to life and security of social activists and community representatives in the Colombian coal mining regions of Cesar, La Guajira and country wide, all Bettercoal Members join the Bettercoal Suppliers operating in Colombia in their public statements and policies of a zero-tolerance policy regarding threats, intimidation, and physical attacks against anybody, including human rights defenders and community leaders. Such policies are aimed to clarify once for all that perpetrators do not represent the interests of the companies. Also, these policies are considered to be a common element for the implementation of the current Continuous Improvement Plans and the upcoming Site-Assessments in Colombia.

All Bettercoal Members welcome the processes of truth-finding and reconciliation in the mining areas and have supported the process with their expertise in stakeholder engagement. As the role of coal mining sector in restoring trust and foster development in Colombia is crucial, Bettercoal supports the initiatives mining companies have undertaken to partner with the Colombian Government and other relevant parties in the peacebuilding and development efforts, including the establishment of a regional reconciliation dialogue with victim communities in Cesar and La Guajira.
