BETTERCOAL PUBLISHES RECOGNITION METHODOLOGY AND PROCESS
Published on May 22, 2024
London, UK – Bettercoal is pleased to share our newly developed methodology for the recognition of other standards. The methodology outlines the process which Bettercoal will follow to review and determine whether it recognises other standards.
This work was prompted by an acknowledgement that companies are facing an emerging number of standards and frameworks requiring their attention and compliance across the areas of Environment, Social and Governance. This direction of travel is a positive step towards improved supply chain performance and behaviour and requires dedicated commitment and focus.
Katie Warrick, Executive Director, stated: “As the standards landscape continues to evolve, it is important to us to explore whether there are opportunities for us to recognise other initiatives that are also driving meaningful change. Throughout this process, we will ensure our assurance processes and comprehensive standard, the Bettercoal Code 2.0, continue to be robust and maintain their rigor.
With over a decade of experience running a coal standard, we have continued to evolve and build on our experience, collaborating wherever possible. This framework represents the next step in that journey, and we will explore where there are opportunities to recognise and be recognised by other initiatives, encouraging the adoption of existing systems and overall working towards a global responsible coal supply chain.”

About the Bettercoal Programme
The Bettercoal Programme was established by a group of major coal buyers with the purpose to promote continuous improvement in the mining and sourcing of coal for the benefit of all people impacted by the industry, workers and coal mining communities.
About our standard
The Bettercoal Standard (“the Code”), originally launched in 2013, with the updated Bettercoal 2.0 launched in 2021, is now the internationally recognised Standard for assessing, assuring and sustaining stringent ethical, environmental and social performance across the coal mining supply chain. The Code consists of 144 provisions, under 12 principles, embedded within the framework of ESG: Environment, Social and Governance.
