Announcing Khanye Colliery – Canyon Coal as a Bettercoal Producer

We are pleased to announce that Khanye Colliery - Canyon Coal has become a Bettercoal Producer, marking a significant step as the only producer in South Africa to achieve this status. 

Khanye Colliery, located in Bronkhorstspruit, South Africa, underwent a Bettercoal Site Assessment in November 2023. The assessment reviewed the producers' operations against the provisions of the Bettercoal Code 2.0, evaluating performance across key areas such as environmental management, working conditions, business integrity and community engagement.  

A Continuous Improvement Plan (CIP) has been developed, outlining actions Khanye Colliery will have to undertake over the next four years in order to align its practices with Bettercoal Code 2.0 provisions.  

The Bettercoal Code 2.0 is an internationally recognised Standard for assessing, assuring and sustaining stringent ethical, environmental and social performance in the coal mining supply chain. Being a Bettercoal Producer is an important way in which coal companies can demonstrate their commitment to these issues.
