Bettercoal Code ready to move to Operations following successful Consultation of its Code

“Following a successful global consultation of the Bettercoal Code, we are now preparing for the operational phase”, says Bettercoal’s Executive Director, Martin Christie. “The consultation process was extremely valuable in not only strengthening the Code itself, but also to gain an understanding of some of the key issues related to the coal sector in four key coal producing countries. We offer our thanks to those who participated.”

The Bettercoal Code was subject to 2 phases of consultation and included stakeholder meetings in South Africa, Colombia, Indonesia and Russia. Having reviewed stakeholder comments with its Members and Stakeholder Advisory Group, Bettercoal will propose the Code for adoption by its Members in mid-2013.

Bettercoal has also developed an assessment toolkit in parallel with the Code which will enable the organisation to engage coal suppliers on both self- and third-party assessments following adoption of the Code. “Gearing up for this operational phase is exciting for both Bettercoal and its Members,” added Martin. As we deliver the results of assessments into our database Members will be able to integrate this robust data into their individual coal purchasing decisions and the cycle of improvement in the supply chain begins.”
