BETTERCOAL ANNUAL REPORT 2022

Published on September 25, 2023

Bettercoal is pleased to announce the launch of its 2022 Annual Report.

In our report, we reflect on a year of dynamic shifts and progress. As our assessors returned to the field, the inaugural assessment against the new Bettercoal Code 2.0 marked a significant milestone. We navigated shifts in our operating landscape, working closely with Members to integrate new producers into our assessment process. The creation of the South Africa Working Group underscores our commitment to driving improvement across regions, complementing our longstanding Colombia Group. Through these dedicated groups, we deepen collaboration with Members, fostering nuanced understanding of coal mining issues in key producing countries. Our first CIP verification visit took place in 2022, with third-party assessors back out on site to verify improvements that had been made over the almost complete four-year assessment cycle.

At Bettercoal, we don’t just apply the framework of continuous improvement to the producers we assess, we apply the same rigour to ourselves. Our ongoing review of assurance documentation ensures alignment with industry best practices, an endeavour that continues under the oversight of our multi-stakeholder governance body, the Technical and Advisory Committee.

In a positive turn, face-to-face engagements with stakeholders resumed, further enriching our contextual understanding of specific issues. A delegation of members and the Secretariat travelled to Colombia and met with a wide range of stakeholders.

As we continue our work in this space, we remain grateful of the support of our Members, the expertise of the Lead Assessors, the dedication of Bettercoal Producers, and the open dialogue with our stakeholders. Together, we are committed to working towards a responsible global supply chain.
