Bettercoal Annual Report 2021
Bettercoal has today launched its 2021 Annual Report. The report notes that despite the continued challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, Bettercoal was able to adapt and move its work forward in this new global context.
This included the launch of the Bettercoal Code 2.0, a strengthened and more robust code that reflects international best practice on mining and better alignment with ESG principles, continued engagements with Bettercoal Producers on their Continuous Improvement Plans, and a virtual engagement programme held over two months with Colombian stakeholders organised by the Colombia Working Group, which helped us to continue building our knowledge and understanding of key issues.
This work was undertaken alongside a review of Bettercoal’s governance and membership structure, and the beginning of Bettercoal’s work to review its assurance system. As Executive Director, Katie Warrick, stated: “Our mission of ‘continuous improvement’ applies to Bettercoal, as much as it does to the coal producers that have gone through our assessment process. Our work in 2021 was driven by this recognition and the importance of consultation and understanding how we can ‘continuously improve’.
2021 was an important year for Bettercoal, as explained by Bettercoal Chairman, Frank Plumacher: “While 2021 posed challenges, I am pleased that Bettercoal has utilised this time to strengthen the Code, to review and update its governance and to start the important process of updating its assurance system”.
We are grateful to drive our work towards a global responsible coal supply chain forward with our committed membership and the Bettercoal team.
