Bettercoal Announces Appointment of New Executive Director

Published on February 17, 2021

Bettercoal is pleased to announce the appointment of Katie Warrick as the new Executive Director, who is taking up her post on the 17th February 2021.

Katie brings extensive experience of the global coal industry, having most recently served as Communications and Strategy Director at the World Coal Association, where she also took on the role of Interim Chief Executive for over half a year. Katie has a proven track record of driving forward multi-stakeholder initiatives, understanding and engaging with different markets and providing strategic direction to complex issues and initiatives, covering sustainability, technology and membership development.

Frank Plümacher, Chair of the Bettercoal Board of Directors commented: “The Board of Directors is delighted to welcome Katie to Bettercoal to take on the role of Executive Director. We strongly believe that her experience in the coal industry and her skills will help to drive Bettercoal forward and expand its scope of work, to reach markets where responsible mining is not only important but urgent. We look forward to working with her.”

Bettercoal is on the path to fulfil its claim to work towards a responsible coal supply chain globally. Over recent years, the organisation has focused on updating and improving its Assurance Process, developing and strengthening relationships with key stakeholders and increasing its transparency in the work that it undertakes, both in terms of implementation and outcomes.

Katie Warrick commented: “It is a privilege to join Bettercoal and work with members and the team to take this important work forward. As long as coal is being mined, it’s essential that this is done in the most responsible way towards the people and communities impacted, workers and the environment. Bettercoal has demonstrated real leadership, driving continuous improvement and working collaboratively to raise standards in the coal supply chain. As we get ready to launch the updated Bettercoal Code 2.0, it is an important time for the organisation, as we look to expand our scope of work and implement the standard more widely. I’m looking forward to collaborating with our stakeholders and opening up new conversations on how we can drive better coal globally”.

The Bettercoal Board thanks Anne-Claire Howard, the current Executive Director, for her drive, hard work and commitment to grow the organisation to where it is today.
