Rowan will bring to Bettercoal over 11 years of experience in both in-house and consultancy social and environmental management roles, working across a number of sectors including mining, oil and gas, infrastructure, fashion and finance. Her international experience spans standards and compliance, impact assessment, auditing and monitoring, capacity-building, sustainability reporting and stakeholder engagement.
A strong believer in the enabling role of the private sector in developing world contexts, Rowan has travelled the world extensively consulting companies such as Rio Tinto, BP, Standard Chartered Bank and South Stream Transport on their social and environmental impact. With collaboration at the heart of driving more sustainable practices, Rowan has proactively engaged with a wide range of stakeholders including governments, NGOs, trade unions and organisations.
More recently, Rowan has focused her efforts on driving positive change through the fashion industry, leading the global Factory Improvement Programme for the private labels of European e-commerce fashion company Zalando. Through this role, Rowan developed hands-on experience working with business partners in factories worldwide to monitor their performance and define and implement a strategic improvement path not only good for workers and the environment, but also for business.
Rowan is an IRCA approved SA8000 and ISO14001 auditor and has a strong working knowledge of the IFC Performance Standards, the OECD Guidelines, the Equator Principles and a wide range of social and environmental certification standards and assurance schemes.
