Bettercoal Newsletter May 2020

Welcome to Bettercoal Newsletter
May 2020

Since the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic, the world has been living through challenging and strenuous times. We understand that the unprecedented times we are facing also demand unprecedented measures by organisations all over the world. We are working closely with Bettercoal Suppliers and Members, who are putting in place different measures to respond to the current circumstances in the best possible way they can, complying with local and national legislation and constantly assessing the impact of their actions in the present but also in the times to come.
Following the evolution of the global context, Bettercoal has been adjusting its projects and work accordingly. Although this implied that some of our international in-person commitments had to be put on hold for now, Bettercoal has committed to continuing all the work it can virtually and has been taking the necessary steps to keep the engagement as much as possible with internal and external stakeholders.
In this line, we are proud to announce the launching of the Bettercoal Annual Report 2019, which reviews the organisation’s milestones and achievements in the last year. We have also launched the Bettercoal Code Review, which seeks to improve the robustness of the Code and align more with the industry around responsible environmental and social mining practices. This year we are continuing our engagement with our Suppliers and stakeholders in Colombia and Russia through the Country Working Groups’ work. Additionally, we have working on different thought pieces and articles to add our grain of sand to the most relevant discussions around coal mining and trying to shed light into less spoken of issues in the industry.
We look forward to keeping on working and engaging with our numerous internal and external stakeholders through our work and support through these difficult times.

Country Working Groups

During their first year of work in 2018, the Colombia Working Group (CWG) and Russia Working Group (RWG) have made significant progress and focused on the engagement with key local and international stakeholders in both countries.
The goals set for the groups in their Work Plans 2020 are based on the learning of its first year of work. Although the Covid-19 pandemic context inevitably affect some of them, the Country Working Groups are committed to continuing as much as possible its work and engagement virtually.
