Enel is a multinational power company and a leading integrated player in the global power, gas and renewables markets. It is Europe’s largest utility in terms of market capitalisation and figures among the world’s leading power companies in terms of installed capacity and reported EBITDA. The Group is present in over 30 countries worldwide, producing energy with around 88 GW of managed capacity. Enel distributes electricity and gas through a network of 2.1 million kilometres, and with over 65 million business and household customers globally, the Group has the largest customer base among European competitors. Enel’s renewables arm Enel Green Power already manages around 40 GW of wind, solar, geothermal, biomass and hydropower plants in Europe, the Americas, Africa, Asia and Australia.
While we are still transitioning to the new energy model and as long as we still use coal, despite an expected continuous decrease of Enel’s consumption, we believe that our responsibility is to proactively help suppliers improve their sustainability performance so that Human Rights, Labour and Environmental Standards and Local communities are safeguarded and coal mining communities are impacted positively. Bettercoal is an effective organisation for ensuring this as it sets our expectations on coal suppliers’ behaviour, in a collaborative and multi-stakeholder environment, through the Bettercoal Code and suppliers are invited to participate in this on-going improvement process based on independent and reliable on-site assessments and improvement plans.
