Drax Group plc plays a vital role in helping change the way energy is generated, supplied and used. Its 2,300-strong staff operate across three principal areas of activity – power generation, energy sales and services for business customers and compressed wood pellet production. The Group includes: Drax Power Ltd which operates the largest power station in the UK, based at Selby, North Yorkshire and supplied 6 percent of the country’s electricity needs and 15% of the UK’s renewable power in 2017 through the use of sustainable biomass. Around 9% of Drax Group revenues came from coal power generation in 2017.
Drax’s business is changing rapidly and in line with the UK Government’s policy to remove coal from the UK’s power system by 2025 we are preparing for a post-coal future. In the meantime, we must continue to secure our coal responsibly. Our coal sourcing is strictly governed by our compliance, sustainability and risk teams and Bettercoal is helping us promote the continuous improvement of corporate responsibility in the coal supply chain. We believe that by working with other major utilities, through initiatives like Bettercoal, we are best placed to improve social, ethical and environmental standards. Bettercoal assessments form part of our supply chain due diligence and our contracts with suppliers make it clear we prefer to source from Bettercoal assessed mines and suppliers.
