Katie Warrick, Bettercoal Executive Director, commented: “We are pleased to welcome GKM to our organisation. Bettercoal Members are critical in supporting our work towards a global responsible coal supply chain. Bettercoal has carried out 69 assessments in eight countries and we are looking forward to building on this and expanding our scope of work.”

Holger Weiss, Head of Materials Management at GKM, added: “We are aware of our responsibility towards a sustainable coal supply chain. We have followed the development of Bettercoal for many years and have seen continuous positive developments. We are convinced of the importance of collaborating with other companies in this area, engaging in dialogue with the affected producers and working on an increase of Bettercoal coal.”

GKM is jointly owned by its shareholders RWE Generation SE in Essen, EnBW Energie Baden-Württemberg AG in Karlsruhe and MVV RHE GmbH in Mannheim. GKM is also an important supplier of single-phase railway power for DB Energie GmbH.

About Bettercoal

Bettercoal is working towards a global responsible coal supply chain. We were established in 2012 by a group of major European coal buyers to promote the continuous improvement of sustainability performance in their coal supply chain. We do this by assessing the performance of coal mining operations against the twelve principles of the Bettercoal Code through the Supplier Assessment Process. Responsible mining is essential to the sustainable growth of our societies. For further information about Bettercoal, please visit our website: www.bettercoal.org.
