Rather than a typical certifying body, Bettercoal assesses performance of coal Suppliers against the ten principles of the Bettercoal Code and jointly develops a Continuous Improvement Plan, the summary results of which are shared with Bettercoal Members.
Coal Suppliers are invited to join the Bettercoal Assessment Programme by Bettercoal and avoid the multiplication of audits by coal buyers.
The Bettercoal Assessment Programme includes the following key components: a Self-Assessment Questionnaire, an independent third-party Site-Assessment and Continuous Improvement Plan, and Re-Assessment.
Bettercoal is working to improve the Assessment Cycle and Process as part of the Assurance System Review which is taking place between 2016 and 2017. Although the key components will remain in place, improvements will be made to better capture the commitment of coal Suppliers, ensure that the outcomes and expectations are clear, reporting is transparent and deadlines are met. The improved Bettercoal Assessment Process and Cycle will take a risk-based approach to assurance to provide pertinent information to Bettercoal Members on responsible mining practices, whilst reducing the assurance burden for mining companies and ensuring the credibility of our programme to stakeholders.
The Assessment Cycle that is currently being reviewed and discussed with the Technical & Advisory Committee and Bettercoal Members is shown in the diagrams below. The final documents will be uploaded on the Bettercoal website once they are approved by the Board of Directors. For more information or questions, please contact Marieke van der Mijn.
