Iberdrola joins Bettercoal

Bettercoal is delighted that Iberdrola, the Spanish utility company, has joined the global initiative to promote the continuous improvement of corporate responsibility in the international coal supply chain.  The Members of Bettercoal are major coal buyers that require their coal suppliers to align with the organisation’s code of practice, the Bettercoal Code. The initiative aims to support on-the-ground changes to the benefit of workers, communities, businesses and the environment.

Martin Christie, Executive Director of Bettercoal said: “I am delighted that Iberdrola has joined Bettercoal and is showing leadership in seeking to truly understand the ethical, social and environmental performance of the mines that supply its thermal power plants.  Our supplier assessment program is gaining momentum and we are working with mines in countries including Colombia, Germany, Indonesia, Russia, South Africa, the USA and as a result we are increasingly able to provide the coal buyers with robust ethical, social and environmental performance data to integrate into their coal purchasing decisions.”
