Why join Bettercoal?

  • By joining Bettercoal, your company will take part in a global effort to make a real, on-the-ground difference for workers, communities, local companies and the environment impacted by coal mining.
  • Bettercoal will reduce individual companies’ cost of ensuring compliance through sharing of self- and site-assessments as well as benefit suppliers that will avoid having to meet multiple standards and incur costs of duplicative auditing.
  • By joining forces, coal buyers are able to have more impact on supplier practices than if acting by themselves.
  • Bettercoal contributes to improved mitigation of reputational, regulatory and operational risk associated with coal sourcing.
  • Bettercoal responds to employees, customers, regulators, owners and other key stakeholders’ expectations for supply chain sustainability.

Regular Membership eligibility criteria

To be eligible to apply for Regular Membership of Bettercoal, the applicant must:

  • Be a company for which coal constitutes a significant raw material in the production processes of its core business activity.
  • Be a company or incorporated organisation with a independent legal identity.

Rights of Regular Members

Bettercoal Regular Members:

  • Have the right to attend, speak and vote at the general assembly and are eligible to sit on the Board of Directors.
  • Can use the Bettercoal logo.
  • Can use the Bettercoal tools including use the Bettercoal Self-Assessment and Site-Assessment.
  • Have access to the global Bettercoal Assessment Database, which stores assessments of mines, including Self- and Site-assessments.
  • Can participate in Bettercoal working groups.

Responsibilities of Regular Members

Upon joining Bettercoal, Regular Members of Bettercoal make the following commitments:

  • Publicly endorse the Company including its vision, mission and standards.
  • Embrace the Principles of the Bettercoal Code for their business operations in the coal supply chain.
  • Recognize and promote the Bettercoal Code as a standard for social, environmental and ethical performance in the coal supply chain.
  • Implement the Bettercoal Code and Bettercoal tools in its due diligence processes in the coal supply chain.
  • Implement the Bettercoal Code in its coal supply chain through engagement and collaboration with coal suppliers and the use of Bettercoal tools.
  • Participate in and contribute to the collective action of Bettercoal and provide information for the purposes of Bettercoal’s annual report.

In addition, Regular Members operating and/or owning coal mines must recognize the importance of maintaining standards in owned or controlled mines that align with the Bettercoal Code as well as continuously improve performance.

Regular Member Dues

The Membership dues for 2014 are divided into two levels:

  • For businesses with sales greater than EUR 5 bn, Membership dues amount to EUR 60,000.
  • For businesses with sales less than EUR 5 bn, Membership dues amount to EUR 35,000.

Application Process

To apply to become a Regular Member of Bettercoal, please return the application form and related information to Bettercoal at info@bettercoal.org.

Bettercoal will contact you to confirm receipt of the application. The Executive Director of Bettercoal and the Board of Directors will review your application. On acceptance of the application, Bettercoal will confirm the Membership. The Bettercoal Board of Directors and the Executive Director will strive to process your application within 60 days.

Bettercoal Code

The Bettercoal Code sets out the ethical, social and environmental principles and provisions that members of Bettercoal expect organizations producing coal in their supply chain to align with.
